Pence orders flags at half-staff in honor of Indiana cadet

Gov. Mike Pence has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of a West Point cadet and Indiana native killed last week during training exercises at Fort Hood, Texas.

Cadet Mitchell Alexander Winey, a 21-year-old Valparaiso native, died after an Army transport truck he was riding in was washed away in a rain-swollen creek Thursday.

Flags at all state buildings will be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of Winey’s funeral. Pence is also asking businesses around the state to fly flags at half-staff.

Winey was one of nine soldiers killed when the truck overturned. Heavy rains have saturated parts of Texas, causing deadly flooding.

Pence’s office says Winey was at Fort Hood for Cadet Troop Leader Training. Winey attended Chesterton High School in northwest Indiana.
