In their  first meeting for the new year, the Washington City Council heard a report about infrastructure improvements to prepare for expected growth near I-69.

Richard Burch of Midwestern Engineers displayed a map that identified three potential 20 acre tracts where the new waste water facility could be built.   Burch suggested the City obtain options on the property due to the possible 30 month planning and construction window, and the real potential for economic growth in the area.  Burch said running waste water from the I-69 area across town to the current facility was not economically prudent and could test the limits of the current treatment plant.  Burch said discussions had been held with the Southern Indiana Development Corporation about funding assistance for the potential $12 million project.

The Council also heard Burch report on discussions with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management concerning the need for a mechanical cleaner for the screens at the overflow control plant.  Due to grass, yard waste, and other trash clogging the screens Washington is under mandate to remedy the situation.  The mechanical cleaner will cost the City an estimated $959,000.   Waste Water Superintendent Scott Rainey said the mechanical cleaner was part of the Overflow plants original plans, but was cut out as a money saving measure.
