Statehouse Organization Day

Supporters and opponents of expanded LGBT civil rights protections plan to hold rallies at the Statehouse.

Though the Legislature doesn’t meet regularly until January, lawmakers will be at the Statehouse Tuesday for “Organization Day,” a usually mundane gathering where leaders give speeches and tend to administrative matters.

But critics and supporters of expanded rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people expect a high-profile clash over the issue this session and plan to make their feelings known.

Republicans are uncomfortable with the issue because it drives a wedge between two pillars of the GOP base. The Indiana Chamber of Commerce, which represents the business establishment, supports the idea. But many religious conservatives remain opposed.
