A Republican state legislator is resigning his seat a year after winning a re-election campaign that cost nearly $500,000.

Rep. Matt Ubelhor of Bloomfield announced Monday he was resigning from the Indiana House effective Dec. 1 to focus on business opportunities.

Ubelhor was first elected in 2010 and represented District 62, which covers parts of Daviess, Martin, Greene and Monroe Counties.

Ubelhor was the operations manager of a Peabody Energy coal mine that closed in 2014. He won re-election last year with 55 percent of the vote after a campaign that included ads on Indianapolis television stations for Ubelhor and his Democratic opponent.

Republican committeemen will select someone to complete Ubelhor’s term, which ends with the 2016 election.
