Indiana’s wildlife agency is teaming up in a partnership to boost fish populations in a southwestern Indiana lake.
The state Department of Natural Resources says the effort to create fish habitats will start this winter at Sullivan Lake, a 451-acre reservoir where natural fish shelters are lacking. A local concrete contracting firm has donated 200 cinder blocks for the effort to install that habitat.
Sullivan County Jail inmates will cut lumber to build fish cribs that look like small log cabins and create refuges for fish. Brush piles will also be placed in the lake. The nonprofit angling group Bass Unlimited has pledged materials and volunteers to help with the fish-refuge construction.
Most of Indiana’s reservoirs are 50 or more years old and their original fish cover has deteriorated.
