City Council hears rezoning request and a presentation on net-metering

The Washington City Council heard a request for rezoning from David Gray at Monday’s meeting.

The request concerns a lot on Southeast 5th.  Gray was requesting the lot behind Scoops be rezoned from residential to commercial as Gray wants to expand the parking lot of Scoops.

The Council will act on the request at their next meeting.

The Councilmen also heard a presentation from Doug Buresh, Vice-President of Planning and Operations for the Indiana Municipal Power Agency.  Buresh discussed the affect of non-traditional power sources that are constructed by private citizens on a city’s power delivery infrastructure.

Buresh suggested the Council consider passing an ordinance that would make fees for the support of the power grid more equitable for those using traditional power sources and those engaged in net-metering through the use of solar, wind, or other non-traditional personal power sources.  Buresh said net-metering places a disproportionate burden of cost to maintain the infrastructure on those with traditional power sources. Especially those with lower income and retirees   Buresh also recommended code changes that would protect electrical workers from unknown feedback from private solar or wind systems.   The Council instructed City Attorney Tim Dant to investigate the matter.
