The City of Washington will begin the plannned Street Sign Modernization project  on Monday.

Work by Michiana Contracting will involve replacing the majority of street & traffic control signs throughout the city.  Work starts Monday in the northwest part of town and will move through various neighborhoods for about 60 days.

Washington Mayor Joe Wellman said the new ‘high-reflectivity’ signs t comply with the federal government’s new standards for better visibility, especially at night.  He added the project is being paid through a 90% grant of federal highway safety dollars.  The city’s 10%-match, approximately $33,000, is being paid through Motor Vehicle Highway funds, a large portion of which comes from the gasoline tax drivers pay at the pump.

Residents are asked to drive carefully in work zones as the signs are being installed.  The mayor said there should be only slight disruption of traffic flow as the work is done.
