Maxwell Carl “Max” Mahoney

Maxwell Carl “Max” Mahoney, 97, formerly of Washington, passed away Tuesday.

Max was born Aug. 11, 1917, to the late Lewis Mahoney and Mary Ellen Byrd Mahoney. In July 1944, Max was wed to Geneva Ruth Pipher and they just celebrated 71 wonderful years together. Max was also a World War II veteran and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and a ribbon for American Theatre European-African Middle Eastern W/1 Bronze Star.

Max attended First Baptist Church of Washington, was a 68-year member of the American Legion Burch-Wood Post 121 of Washington, and loved trying new things.

Max is survived by his loving wife, Geneva Ruth (Pipher) Mahoney of Merritt Island; one daughter, Peggy Howard (John Horton) of Washington; two sons, Alan Mahoney (Melinda Buzz) of Hobe Sound, Florida, Mark Mahoney of Merritt Island; four grandchildren, Jeff Howard of Malabar, Florida, Brian Howard of Jasper, Anna Maxey of Indianapolis, Kristina Mahoney of Cocoa, Florida; and eight great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be at Gill Funeral Home, 308 E. Walnut St., Washington, on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be a funeral service Wednesday at 10 a.m., also at the funeral home, officiated by Yvonne Evans. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery with military funeral honors by the American Legion and VFW Honor Guard.
