Less than a week after the Pike County School Board voted to close the Otwell Elementary School due to financial reasons, the community came out to see what they could to possibly save the school.

Around 200 people attended a community meeting at the school last night going over options and ideas.  One of the more prominent  thoughts was to make Otwell Elementary a charter school.

There was a committee formed to continue looking at how to keep the school open.  They’ll meet again next week.

Over 300 people have signed a petition protesting the closing.

The School Board voted to close the school this past Monday.  Officials say shutting down Otwell after the next school year will save the corporation $700,000 per year.
