George Henry Emmons, 92, passed away Sunday evening at Ketcham Memorial Nursing Center in Odon.

Born May 12, 1923, in Oaktown, he was the son of Lee Roy and Millie Jane (Bryant) Emmons.

George began work at an early age at the Elnora school where he met his wife of 72 years, Martha Joyce (Summitt) Emmons, and she survives.

He was a World War II veteran, serving as an Army sergeant with the 811th tank destroyer battalion. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic efforts in the Battle of the Bulge.

George and Martha Jane were married April 5, 1943. They had twin daughters in 1946, the late Linda Joyce (Long) and Brenda Jane (Walls). A third daughter, Lori Jeannie (Shake), was born in 1960.

A lifelong love of auto mechanics was his career for several decades. George loved NASCAR, was a prize winning fisherman and did trapping with his brothers in their early years. He was an avid book reader and also enjoyed friendly poker games with his buddies.

George was a member of the Elnora Christian Church. He was devoted to family and took excellent care of his girls.

He will be sadly missed by his wife and daughters, 10 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as many friends and neighbors of the North Daviess Community.

George is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Charles, Kenneth and Wade; one daughter, Linda Joyce Long; and two sons-in-law, Jackie C. Walls and David J. Shake.
