Changes are coming at the BMV

Leadership changes are expected at the Indiana BMV. Commissioner Kent Abernathy is making plans to make fixes and another round of refunds after a report details serious problems within the agency.   He says the agency found Hoosiers were overcharged on possibly 16 fees. The exact fees and scope of that problem won‘t be known until the end of June at the earliest. The agency also found people underpaid on possibly 10 separate fees. The recent independent BKD report detailed the BMV was collecting too many different fees for different groups – fees that were often vague – and recommended the legislature change that ASAP.
The report also raised questions about the software the agency uses to set prices and collect money from Indiana residents, suggesting it was time for an upgrade in order to avoid errors with future bills. The commissioner says he’s already working with state lawmakers to begin the fixes.
