Lowell Raymond Smith, 72, of Washington, passed away Thursday at 3:05 a.m. at Hillside Manor Nursing Center.

He was born Aug. 30, 1942, in Washington, to Mary Alice (Brown) and Russell L. Smith.

He was a 1960 Washington Catholic High School graduate and a graduate of Elkhart University with a degree as a medical lab and X-ray technician and worked at Daviess Community Hospital and Jasper Memorial Hospital. He later worked for Sellman and Mallet, from where he retired. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Eagles, and Knights of Columbus. He was a former president of the Jaycees Club. As a youngster, he won a prestigious Eagle Scout Award. Lowell loved to fish and hunt.

He is survived by his wife Mary (Cox) Smith, whom he married May 19, 1986; sons Chris (Susan) Smith, Greg Smith, and Jeff (Angie) Smith, all of Washington; stepchildren, Joanna Cox, Jeremy Cox, and Jason Cox; grandchildren, Lindsey Smith, Chelsea (Brandon) Baker, Garrett Smith, Logan Smith, Damon Smith, and Sydni Smith; stepgrandchildren, Tiffany Emmons and Matthew Cox; and four stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph (Mary) Smith and a sister, Andrea (Geno) Underhill, both of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Clarke Smith and Alan Smith.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ed Lee Mortuary, with Yvonne Evans officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
