Planning for Washington’s Bicentennial in 2016 is underway and picking up steam.  That’s what the Bicentennial Steering Committee co-chairmen, Terri Kelso and Don Spillman told the members of Washington’s Rotary Club, Wednesday afternoon.

Kelso told the Rotarians that the celebration will feature a year-long concert series, and a celebration that will run from July 1 to the 10th, next year.   The highlights will include a parade, the opening of the sesquicentennial time capsule from 50 years ago, a community church service and a community birthday party centered around East Side Park.  But Spillman and Kelso said some events will get underway this year, with the Bicentennial Kick-off Gala scheduled for Nov. 14.  There will also be a talent show.  Kelso noted that volunteers are still needed to help with projects.

Spillman reminded the Rotarians that the Bicentennial Committee is not receiving tax money and needs donations from the community to be able to fund all the planned projects.   He said anyone wanting to help or donate can go to the website at www.200plusproject.com  or check the 200plusproject Facebook page and Twitter account.

Mayor Joe Wellman said the slogan of the Bicentennial is “Celebrate the Past – Build the Future” and pointed several long term projects planned by the Bicentennial Committees.

Spillman encouraged participation and said that any group or organization wanting a program about the Bicentennial or history of Washington could contact him.
