It‘s day five (Friday) of the "Cops Cycling for Indiana Cops". C-O-P-S stands for "concerns of police survivors". The ride consists of Indiana police officers, along with friends, family and survivors, bicycling 878 miles around the state to honor officers who died in the line of duty. The ride began Monday in Indianapolis and ends in the Circle City on August 7th at the Heroes section of Crown Hill cemetery.
Master trooper Rich Crawford says the group will be biking from Huntingburg to Vincennes today (Friday).
Crawford says So Far, the Weather has been good for the most part.
Indiana State Police Lieutenant Gary Dudley and retired Lake County Sheriff‘s Department Chief Gary Martin were killed in a wreck during the 2006 cops ride. Dudley‘s widow, Carolyn, is now co-president of Indiana Cops. His brother, Dan Dudley, is one of the cyclists in this year‘s ride.

LAWRENCE CO. HEALTH DEPARTMENT SHOWCASING REMODEL
The Lawrence County Health Department will be showcasing it's newly remodled facilities on Sunday, August 1st.
Public Health Administrator Phyllis Wells says the Health Department offers a wide-variety of services including a rural health clinic for those in need of medical services. Wells says the Health Department also provides behavioral health services for those suffering from drug addiction or mental illness.
They also sponsor Blood Pressure, Vision and Hearing screenings.
The Open House will be held from 1-to-3 pm Central time Sunday. Refreshments will be provided.

A former Terre Haute emergency medical technician wanted for sexual misconduct and theft turned himself into the Putnam county sheriff‘s department thursday.
27-year old Jason Jordan allegedly touched a female patient inappropriately and also removed several pictures from her cell phone.
The 26-year old woman complained about Jordan‘s alleged actions during the trip from Brazil to Indianapolis on July 12th.

A Chandler man will serve 18 months in a community corrections work release program after pleading guilty to mail fraud and conspiracy to commit arson.
37-year-old Christopher Kimbrough was sentenced in federal court in Indianapolis Wednesday.
Kimbrough admitted that he agreed to pay another person ten-thousand dollars to set a fire on rental property he owned on East Oregon Street in Evansville over two years ago. The Evansville Fire Department estimated the loss for the building and contents was 50-thousand dollars.
Additional investigation found that the property was insured by Kimbrough for 80-thousand. Kimbrough attempted to collect insurance proceeds on the property after the fire.
Chief U.S. District Judge Richard Young ordered Kimbrough to be on supervised release for 18 months after his work release sentence. Kimbrough was also ordered to pay back nearly 15-thousand dollars to the Evansville Fire Department and other victims of his offense.
Travis Adams, a co-defendant alleged to have set the fire, has a sentencing hearing scheduled for August 10th.

BUDGET SHORTFALLS BRING LAYOFFS
Budget shortfalls are forcing local governments to lay off workers, slash critical programs and raise taxes. the ripple effect carries down to businesses and working families.
Without additional funding, state budget actions could cost the u-s economy 900-thousand public- and private-sector jobs.
State-mandated budget cuts are having a dramatic impact on Indiana.
Budget shortfalls have forced downsizing at Richmond state hospital, along with facilities in Logansport, Madison and Evansville.
These cuts and staff reductions are projected to be complete by March 2011.
The cities of Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Gary --also dealing with major budge reductions.
AFSCME is pushing congress to support the federal medical assistance percentage extension, a stimulus program that assists state and local governments with public health funding.

Back-to-school means a trip to the doctor for a lot of kids.
the indiana state department of health has new recommendations for students going into preschool, kindergarten and the 6th grade effective this year.
All preschool and kindergarten students must have 2 doses of the chicken pox vaccine while kindergarteners must also have their 4th dose of the polio vaccine before entering school.

NEW STATE REGULATION TO PROTECT SENIORS
A new state regulation that went into effect this week is geared at protecting senior citizens from investment advisors who use bogus titles.
The Indiana Secretary of state's office says under the new rule, professionals whose titles include the words "senior,""retirement" and "elder" along with the terms "specialists,""adviser" or "consultant" will
violate state securities law.
Violations are punishable by a 10-thousand dollar fine and license suspension or revocation.
The rule doesn't apply to professional titles approved by the American National Standards Institute or the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.

NEW WW II NAVY EXHIBIT AT INDIANA WAR MEMORIAL
Ten men who sailed on the U-S-S Indiana in WW II were on hand Thursday during a christening ceremony for a model of the ship at the Indiana War Memorial.
Brigadier General J. Stewart Goodwin says the featured guests, now in their 80‘s and 90‘s, were appreciative of the effort to preserve history.
The new 60 pound model, which is over 7 feet long and 14 inches wide, will be the heart of the new WW II Navy exhibit at the Memorial in downtown Indianapolis.

ON THE DAVIESS COUNTY JAIL REPORT.......
21 year old Joshua Owen Padgett of Petersburg was arrested on a petition to revoke a suspended sentence for conspiracy to commit forgery. Bond was set at 25-thousand dollars.
47 year old Laura Ann Wagner of Washington was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. Bond was set at 2-thousand dollars.
61 year old Joann Lorene Smith of Vincennes was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Bond was set at 2-thousand dollars.
This morning's jail population is 219,

ZONING BOARD APPROVES TWO OUT OF FIVE PROPOSALS
Three proposals were denied and two were approved at Wendesday's Washington Board of Zoning Appeals Meeting.
By a 0-7 Vote, the board turned down the application for Bob's Sales and Service at 13 Maysville Road. Bob Freeman's application stated he wanted to *"operate a shop for auto and truck repair including a sales lot, towing and storage of wrecked and inoperable vehicles".* Freeman told the board he was willing to install a fence. However, some board members worried the operation would become a junkyard and difficult to regulate.
A local resident spoke against the proposal and offered members a copy of a letter from her landlord who lives out of state.
Also two other proposals were denied to Harley Hagemeir, Jr. at 1506 Sugarland Road. Hagemeir wants to build a new metal building for personal use and for his carpentry and insulation business. Several residents spoke in opposition to the new structure due to it's size. According to current city code, the building may not exceed twelve hundred square feet and Hagemeir wants to construct a structure nearly three times as large at thirty three hundred feet. Hagemeir was denied the variance for the building and to operate a business from his residence.
The two permits that were approved included; - a conditional use to operate a home day care and construct a three by five sign at 708 State Road 257 was granted to Kevin Stoll. -and Gil Young was granted a conditional use for a personal training center at his home located at 1802 Parkdale Road.

PACE OFFERS SMALL BUSINESS LOANS
Pace Community Action Agency has money available to assist small businesses expand or help individuals thinking about starting a new one.
Bertha Proctor told members of the Knox County Chamber of Commerce yesterday that the Business Expansion and Enterepeneurship Grant is availble in Knox, Daviess, Greene and Sullivan counties.
She says it's for businesses with 5 or fewer employees looking to expand or start a new business.
More information on the loan programs is available by calling Pace at 882-7927, extension 1211.
There is a 150-dollar fee that must accompany each loan application. The fee is non-refundable.

48 TO CLOSE IN SHELBURN FRIDAY
The Indiana Department of Transportation announces that State Road 48 will be closing near Shelburn on Friday.
Working in conjunction with Peabody Coal Company officials, INDOT will be closing S.R. 48 from the junction of U.S. Route 41 to the junction of State Road 159. The closure will allow Peabody to move mining equipment across the highway.
No through vehicle traffic will be allowed, however local residents will have access to the point of closure.

JASPER DOCTOR INJURED AND WIFE KILLED IN KENTUCKY CRASH
Kentucky State Police continue to investigate an accident that happened Tuesday evening that took the life of a Jasper woman and left a Jasper doctor in the hospital.
The investigation revealed that 81 year old Dr. Thomas Eversman was traveling ten miles south of Owensboro when for unknown reasons lost control of his car--entered the median and struck a southbound semi driven by 34 year old Matt Peaugh (pew) of Radcliff, Kentucky.
The impact Eversman's vehicle into the median as it burst into flames. Eversman was ejected from the vehicle and was airlifted to Saint Mary's Hospital in Evansville. His wife and passenger, 74 year old Mary Eversman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck driver was not injured.

It's not so much the heat...buth the humidity that is making this summer feel a little more unbearable in Indiana.
The National Weather Service in Indianapolis says the amounts of rainfall in some areas in June and July have made the ground more moist, pushing the humidity in the atmosphere higher than typical for this time of year.
National Weather Service Chief Meteorologist Dave Tucek says the overnight lows have been warmer than what they normally are for mid-summer. That means the temperatures are more likely to peak into the 90‘s. temperature-wise, Tucek calls this July "pretty usual." He notes last July was cool by comparison.

Police say an object that caused a bomb scare at a Bloomington apartment complex is not a bomb.
Bloomington police Lt. David Drake says the device isn't a bomb but "definitely something made to look like a real one."
Residents were evacuated Wednesday from a building at the Bradford Place Collegiate Residences after a maintenance worker found the device.
Drake says a maintenance worker went into an apartment closet and found two pipes tied together with a wire coming out of it.
Police, firefighters and a bomb squad from Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center responded.

HOMLESSNESS IN PUBLIC SCHOOL KIDS IS ON THE RISE
A new report shows homelessness among children enrolled in Indiana public schools rose 26 percent over the two years ending in 2008-09 as the state felt the brunt of the economic downturn.
The report comes this week from First Focus, a children's advocacy group. It cites recently released federal data.
The report says the number of homeless public school students nationally rose 41 percent from 2006-07 to 2008-09. Indiana's 26 percent growth was tied for 27th highest among states.
Indiana Department of Education figures show homeless public school students numbered about 10,000 across Indiana last year.
The department says about half were in kindergarten through third grade.

CSO GROUNBREAKING HELD TUESDAY
The long awaited Combined Sewer Overflow--or CSO- project in Washington got underway Tuesday as official groundbreaking ceremonies took place near Hawkin's Creek.
For over 20 years, the city has dealt with raw sewage mixing with storm water and overflowing into Hawkin's Creek.
In 2007 the city was placed under an agreed order by state and federal environmental authorities to eliminate the overflow. The estimated cost then was 63 million dollars.
In 2009 the city hired an engineer who designed a cheaper plan that is considered one of the greenest and reliable in the Midwest. The project was then estimated to at 24 million dollars and the city aggressively went after grant funding and received nine million to go toward the project. The rest is being paid for through a State Revolving Loan fund.
Most of the city council, city department heads and staff members, engineers, contractors and economic development officials attended Tuesday's groundbreaking.

A Washington man, who had been the object of a manhunt has been captured.
Officials with the Knox County Sheriff's department arrested Eddie Wayne Grisham at the Vincennes Econolodge around 3:15 Tuesday afternoon.
Grisham was wanted on a Vigo County felony warrant after his alleged involvement with two others in an armed home invasion on June 28. Grisham was allegedly the driver of a vehicle that attempted to run down two Vigo County Sheriff's Deputies.
The third suspect has not been identified and is still at large.
Vigo County detectives took Grisham to the Vigo County Jail Tuesday evening. He will appear in court on today.

Jurors have convicted a former Evansville police officer on charges that he forced two women into sex acts while he was on duty.
The Vanderburgh County jury found 29-year-old Martin Montgomery guilty of two felony counts of criminal deviate conduct on Tuesday.
Prosecution witnesses testified that Montgomery on separate instances in 2008 and 2009 forced women into sex acts with each other or with him after he had gone to their homes on reports of disorderly conduct.
Defense attorney Dennis Brinkmeyer questioned the women's credibility as they had all been drinking alcohol at the time.
Montgomery resigned from the police force soon after his arrest last year and faces six years to 20 years in prison on each conviction.

A Kentucky man was burned after crashing his experimental aircraft in Southern Indiana yesterday.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Chad Dick says 69-year old Charles Lunceford of Lewisport, Kentucky, was attempting a test flight of a home-built gyrocopter when it went down in a wooded area near the Perry County Airport, about 7 miles north of Tell City.
The aircraft burst into flames after the crash, but Lunceford was able to crawl about 100 feet.
Lunceford received burns to his lower extremities and was transported him to the University of Louisville Medical Center. The N-T-S-B is investigating the cause of the crash.

If your looking for a chance to volunteer, the 2010 "Race to Pace" will be held on July 30th from 9 -am. to 3 p.m. at the PACE administrative office on North 4th Street in Vincennes. This will be an opportunity for community volunteers to work with children, clean, organize, and paint. The project will benefit the child ten from Head Start.
The assistant director, Tai Blythe, will supervise interns Colleen Borgmeier and Andrew Stoelting.
