A gun rights bill is in limbo after a House deadline passed without a vote.

Indiana law bans guns on school property. That ends up banning guns in churches which have schools attached. Auburn Republican Ben Smaltz’s bill would have let churches override that restriction — but “school property” turns up in a smorgasbord of state laws, and Smaltz says legislators realized belatedly that changing the definition of the term in one law could create problems for other laws.

Smaltz says the provision could still be added to another gun-related bill, once legislators have a chance to make those definitions consistent.

The bill would also have made gun licenses good for five years instead of four and abolished the license fee.
