Ford is recalling more than 1 million F-150s because the transmission can suddenly downshift into first gear.

Included are F-150s from 2011 through 2013 with six-speed, automatic transmissions.

Ford says a glitch with the truck’s transmission speed sensor is to blame.

Five crashes have been reported to the automaker so far.

Recall notices will be sent to owners starting March 4. Ford dealers will update the truck’s transmission control software to fix the problem at no cost to the owner.

Ford’s F-Series pickup is the top-selling vehicle in the United States. More than 909,000 F-Series pickups were sold in the US in 2018.
