Sullivan County Jail inmate dies after being take to hospital

Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom requested the assistance of Indiana State Police in reference to a death investigation of a 46-year-old female that was incarcerated at the Sullivan County Jail.

The 46-year-old female was arrested by the Sullivan City Police Department for Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Refusal on February 2 at 1:30 a.m. The female was placed in a single person temporary holding cell equipped with continuous video monitoring. At approximately 8:00 yesterday evening the jail staff observed and heard the female in a state of medical distress. Jail staff immediately rendered first aid and contacted EMS. The female was transported to the Sullivan County Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead approximately one-hour later. There are no preliminary indications of self-harm or foul play.

An autopsy has been scheduled for February 4 at 10:00 a.m. at Terre Haute Regional Hospital by Dr. Roland Kohr. A positive identification is expected after the autopsy as well as other information related to the cause and manner of death.

This is an ongoing investigation.
