Washington Mayor Joe Wellman says he will spend more time on other interests when he is no longer Mayor.  Wellman has announced he will not seek a 3rd term in office.

In a press release handed to the city council and the media last night, Mayor Wellman says with the help of some very capable department heads and city employees and the support of the city council and Clerk-Treasurers past and present, wonderful things have been accomplished.

He says he intends to continue working hard for the city until the end of his term in December of next year.  He quotes Thomas Jefferson who said “Every good leader knows when to turn over the reins.”  Wellman added that he retired from a 35 year banking career 10 years ago  and will have served Washington as Mayor for 8 years by this time next year and now looks forward to spending time with family and on his hobbies and plans to do some traveling.

The announcement means the city will have a new Mayor in January 2020.  2019 is a municipal election year with some city council seats and the mayor’s office on the ballot.
