It’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month

It’s October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month across the nation.

          The month evolved from the “Day of Unity” in 1981 and the first awareness month of this sometimes deadly issue was held in 1987.

          Locally, Hopes Voice of Daviess and Knox County, which helps domestic violence victims is holding some events to recognize and participate in awareness efforts.  Megan Smith is the Hope’s Voice Case Manager for Daviess County…

          Some stats concerning domestic violence…

1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the United States have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner.v

  • On a typical day, domestic violence hotlines receive approximately 21,000 calls, an average of close to 15 calls every minute.
  • Intimate partner violence accounts for 15% of all violent crime.

        Today alone in Daviess County in the police reports WAMW News reported 3 people arrested in what was reported to be domestic disputes.  There were several other reports that did not result in an arrest.
