Poor radio signal due to atmosphere

Over the past couple of days WAMW listeners have been texting and calling us complaining of poor radio reception.  Most of the reports have been coming from northern Daviess and Knox Counties.

Here’s what’s happening, it’s the weather.   At certain times of the year, like mid-summer….temperature, dew point and pressure will cause atmospheric layering.   That creates a duct for the propagation of a radio signal.

An FM radio signal travels line of sight.  If you think of it as a laser beam going through the air, it encounters a change in temperature and moisture and splits in several directions.  This can cause interference and poor reception. The signal can also be sent to an area where it’s not usually heard.    The problem typically happens in the morning or evenings and can last a few hours and happens a few days a year.

If you’ve been experiencing problems hearing us, it’s not your equipment or ours.  One way to help is to listen online at wamwamfm.com, until the FM signal clears up.
