Indiana agents raid 2 suspected cockfighting operations

(AP) — Authorities have raided two suspected cockfighting operations in central Indiana and have seized more than 750 birds.

The Indiana Gaming Commission says agents assisted by police conducted the raids Wednesday morning near the Montgomery County town of Waveland and the Indianapolis suburb of Avon. Nearly 620 birds seized near Waveland and 145 seized in Avon were turned over to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The birds were taken to a temporary, undisclosed location, where a veterinarian from the Indiana Board of Animal Health was to examine the birds.

Gaming Commission Superintendent Rob Townsend says a tip three months ago led to the investigation of the operation near Waveland, which appeared to have been active for several years.

No arrests have been made.
