Mayor encouraging contractors to bid on home rehab projects

          The Washington City Council and Board of Works last night approved participation in the Owner Occupied Housing Rehabilitation Program.  The program assists elderly and low-income residents rehab their homes.   One of the problems facing the program in the local area is the small number of contractors bidding on the projects.  Mayor Joe Wellman has issued a call for local contractors to get involved..

          Jenny Dearwester, representing the Southern Indiana Development Commission, said that in the latest grant cycle most of the home rehabilitation focused on making homes more accessible

          With the street paving season approaching, Washington’s Board of Public Works and Safety approved the bid from E&B paving for asphalt.  Mayor Wellman noted the prices were similar to last years.  

          The Board also approved the low bid of just over $111,000 from National Water Services of Paoli, for the Water Filter Replacement Project at the City’s Water Plant.    

          In other action, the Board also approved 11 applicants for the first phase of the City’s sidewalk replacement program.  Mayor Wellman also noted that sidewalks will be built between NE 17th to East Side Park.   The Mayor said that would complete the sidewalk system on Walnut and Memorial from the Park to the west side of Washington.
