James L. Hamersly

James L. Hamersly, 88, passed away Feb. 6, 2018. He was born July 28, 1929, in Racine, Wisconsin, and was the son of Leslie F. Hamersly and Lova (Karr) Hamersly.

Jim attended Washington High School and graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1947. He attended Indiana University, where he was a member of the swim team. He owned and operated Hamersly’s Store in Washington until 1973. He married Harriett Rose on Oct. 21, 1951, and she preceded him in death in February 1987. He then married Elizabeth Bateman in November 1988. Jim was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, deacon and trustee. He was also active in the Washington Rotary Club and YMCA.

Jim is survived by his children, Gail (Mark) Doades, Alan (Cindy) Hamersly, and Scott (Beverly) Hamersly; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and granddaughter Leslie Hamersly.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, at 2 p.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Cheryl Thorne officiating. Friends may visit Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
