Lawrence N. Halter, 96, of Vincennes, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Good Samaritan Hospital with his family by his side. Lawrence was born October 10, 1921 in Vincennes, the son of Lawrence and Emma (Hess) Halter. He married Sheila “Shyla” Quintana on May 18, 1946.

Lawrence served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. from 1943 to 1946 and met his wife Shyla (Quintana) at the Oroville, California U.S.O as he was enroute to China and India. After WW II he returned to Oroville and married his wife Shyla of seventy-one years on May 18, 1946. He returned to Vincennes where he was a lifelong farmer and where he and his wife founded Halter’s Market and Greenhouse in 1972, and today it is still operated by their children and grandchildren. Lawrence was still active in daily operations. He was a lifelong member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and he and his wife received the Brute Society Award. Lawrence was also a member of the American Legion Post 73, VFW Post 1157, and the Knights of Columbus where he was a 3rd Degree member of Counsel No. 712.

Lawrence is survived by his wife of seventy-one years, Shyla (Quintana) Halter; his children: Robert Halter and his wife Cathy, Carolyn Leffler and her husband Tim, Jill Lynch, all of Indianapolis, Sandra “Sandy” Woodall and her husband David, Jay Halter and his wife Brenda, all of Vincennes, and Mark Halter of Afghanistan; grandchildren, Candy Story, Brad Leffler, Justin Leffler, Kim Kotter, Dusty Woodall, Nicole Hambrick, Troy Woodall, Bryan Halter, Judy Williams, Angie Halter, Keith Halter, and Nathena Lynch; twenty-two great-grandchildren; brother, William “Bill” Halter and his wife Joann; and several nieces and nephews. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eugene, Paul, John, Maurice; and sisters, Emma Thomas, Clara Lane, and Irene Frey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, January 22, 2018 at St. Thomas Catholic Church with celebrants Rev. David Fleck and Deacon Earl Ruppel. Interment will follow in St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit with Lawrence’s family on Sunday, January 21, 2018 from 2-6 pm at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway.
