Washington’s senior City Council member has resigned.   In a letter to Mayor Joe Wellman, 4th District Councilman Joe Fleck announced his resignation after 20 years of service to the City of Washington.

Fleck’s resignation was necessary since he has moved out of the 4th District.  In a life of service to the Washington Community, Fleck also served as a city police officer before he joined the Council.  One of only two Democrats on the City Council, Fleck was respected by the majority Republican members of the Council and was chosen for a term as Council President four years ago.  Fleck was absent from Monday night’s meeting, when his letter was read by the Mayor.

Mayor Wellman had words of praise to Councilman Fleck’s years of service.

Under Indiana law, Democrat County Chairman Ron Critchlow will call a caucus of the 4th District’s Democrat precinct chairmen who will select a person to fill out the remainder of Fleck’s term.
