Today is the official observance of Veteran’s Day as city and county offices are closed.  There’s no trash pick-up and the Washington City bus is not running. The county landfill is also closed today.  Mail is running today but not tomorrow which is the actually date of Veteran’s Day.

The Daviess County Museum is holding a Salute to Veterans at 3 today.  That will be on the main section on the 2nd floor of the Museum on Main Street.   Museum spokesperson Linda Cornelius gives us a rundown of what you can expect..

Then at 5-pm a Veteran’s Day parade begins at the library and will go up, the opposite way on Main Street.  Cornelius encourages everyone to be there…

Washington is paying special tribute to Lt. General Tony Jones.  Jones is a Washington Catholic grad who entered the Army after completing ROTC at IU.  He was a 2nd Lt. in the infantry and later volunteered in the aviation combat arms branch of the Army. He commanded Special Ops Aviators called “ The Night Stalkers”.   As a Lieutenant Colonel he commanded an Apache Attack Aviation Battalion in Desert Shield/Desert Storm.              His assignments included tours in Europe, Middle East, Far East, and the United States.  Army aviation plans designed by LTG Jones over the years have been dubbed the standard for aviator and leadership development.    Saturday, a monument in his honor will be place on the Hill of Heroes at East Side Park during a Veteran’s Day Ceremony. Later Gateway Drive at the roundabout east of town will be re-named in honor of Jones.   All of the effort to honor Jones was spearheaded by Mike McKittrick…

McKittrick gave special thanks to the city and county and their employees, the chamber of commerce and Economic Development Commission for helping make the weekend happen.    Jones will appear at the Daviess County Museum today at 3 for their Salute to Veteran’s Program.  Saturday at 11 he’ll be at East Side Park for a ceremony and then at the roundabout for that dedication at 12:30 Saturday.
