Richard “Rick” McDermott, 62, of Otwell, went to his Heavenly Home from Memorial Hospital of Jasper on October 8, 2017. He was born on October 13, 1954 at Lake Charles Louisiana to June Stevens. On September 18, 1976 he married the love of his life, Jill McDermott (Rhoderick). Rick was a graduate from Petersburg High School class of 1972 and a graduate from Oakland City College. He was a retired Boilermaker and member of the local union 374. He was a former member of UMWA. Rick was also a founder and lead guitarist of numerous bands. He enjoyed solitude while fishing. Rick also spent a great deal of time tinkering on automobiles with his son; together they were able to rebuild Johnathan’s first car which was a 1977 Firebird. One of Rick’s other many passions was assisting his wife with rescuing homeless and abandoned dogs over the years; several of which were made their pets and were very dear to both of them.
Rick is survived by his wife, Jill McDermott; son, Johnathan McDermott (Karen); mother, June Brooks; brother, Dan Brooks; and several close friends who were supportive through his illness. He is preceded in death by his step-father Robert Brooks; and sister Valerie Zimmerman.
There will be a celebration of Rick’s Life on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Gill Funeral Home 308 E. Walnut St. Washington, IN 47501 at 7:00 P.M. The family will be receiving guests from 4:00 P.M. until time for the service to begin.
