Water Tower project responsible for over a dozen water line breaks

Washington Mayor Joe Wellman addressed the rash of water line breaks and leaks at last night’s city council meeting.  The water department worked 13 incidents over the the past weekend.

Wellman says the problems on the south side of town are due to a maintenance project on the Campbell Hill Water Tower…

The Mayor said the areas of the water line where the breaks occurred are “decades old”, and those which broke or leaked might be older. The East-West National Highway was a WPA project dating to the Great Depression of the 1930’s, and South Meridian Street was first paved in 1916.  The City completed a project replacing the nearly 100 year old water line under VanTrees Street just last year.

The Mayor commended Water Superintendent Charlie Kane and the Water Department employees for their hard work in dealing with the weekend occurrences.
