Indiana doing good on Labor Day

-If you live in Indiana, you’ve got a better chance of not only getting a job, but landing one that pays a decent wage, said Matt Will, associate prof. of Finance, at the University of Indianapolis.

Will said Indiana is actually in a pretty good place this Labor Day.

“We’re at a 3.1 unemployment rate. That tells us we have a shortage of workers. There are people out there-companies trying to hire people, especially in the skilled labor market, they just can’t find enough workers,” said Will on Abdul-at-Large. “So, good for us.”

Will said if you compare unemployment on this Labor Day to last Labor Day, we’re doing better.

“We’re down. Unemployment has dropped from a year ago, one and a half percent. This is an incredible place to have a family to be looking for a job.”

Will said while some of our surrounding states have not fared as well, the amount of money you can make here has gone up.

“I wouldn’t want to be in a place like say Kentucky or Illinois. Their numbers aren’t as good as ours, and quite honestly Kentucky’s have gotten worse over the last year.”

But, Will said Indiana’s success can be measured by disposable income, the amount that’s left over after you get all the bills paid.

He says, “The leftover money is up. If you look at since November, they’ve really started to rise again and we are now at a record level of disposable income, as of July of this year.”
