Library discusses going county wide

The Washington Carnegie Public Library won’t provide contract services with Steele, Veale and Washington Townships anymore.  The idea is that in the future there’ll be a county wide library system.

At a public meeting last night, Library Director, Teresa Heidenrich said the change in the services was due to Washington city residents subsidizing services for the township users.  Under a new plan, the township residents would pay $40 for a library card.

The Washington Times Herald reports Heidenrich as saying the contracts were not equitable anymore.  Washington residents pay a library tax of over 12 cents or 34.76 per capita for library services while the townships were paying 2.73 per capita.

A county wide library concept is being discussed.  The next step will be to talk about approaching the county commissioners to expand the library’s area.  Another information meeting for anyone interested in supporting a county side library will be September 18th at 5:30 at the library.
