City officials approved a loading zone and deny a request for back pay

At Monday night’s Board of Public Works and Safety meeting…  The Board approved awarding a contract to paint the inside of the Campbell Hill Water Tower to Currants Construction for the low bid of $258,000.  Also approved was a request to close Main Street between East Second and East Fourth for the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Wine and Brew Festival.  The Festival is scheduled for September 1.

A request from NAPA Auto Parts to have a designated loading zone on the north side of South Street met opposition from Kevin Bowen who owns a nearby apartment house.  In the past Bowen’s tenants had used a parking lot he did not own, but the lot sold and the new owner was unhappy with the trash being left in the lot and did not renew the parking agreement with Bowen.   Over Bowen’s objections, the Board approved NAPA’s request and established a loading zone from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In other business, after a long discussion the Board turned down Washington Police Officer Barry Hudson’s request for 51 months of back pay.     Hudson had been suspended due to a state and Federal investigation into an incident that occurred Christmas Eve in 2011.  In October last year the city council rescinded the leave after the case was dismissed.
