21-year-old Mathew Palmer-Coy was sentenced to over six years in prison in connection with a 2015 child abuse case.

A plea agreement was accepted in Daviess Superior Court Tuesday according to the  Washington Times Herald.  Palmer-Coy had pleaded to one count of possession of meth, carrying handgun with no license and neglect of a dependent causing serious bodily injury.  Some time had been served on the possession and weapons charges.

The neglect charges are from July 2015 when the department of child services was contacted by Daviess Community Hospital after treating a 37 day old child for injuries. The baby was later taken to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indy where more injuries were discovered.

Palmer-Coy was living with 30-year-old Candice Freeburn at the time. The baby is her son.   She was sentenced last Thursday to 10 years for neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.

Palmer-Coy will serve the first 720 days of his sentence with the Indiana Department of Corrections and he could be spent in Community Corrections should if he follows the rules of the program.

Both Freeburn and Palmer-Coy have been ordered not to have contact with the victim.
