Mathew Palmer-Coy pleads guilty in connection with abuse case

A man charged in connection with the abuse of a 37 day old baby in Washington  was in court Monday.

Mathew Palmer-Coy was 21 when he was arrested along with Candice Freeburn.

The case started July 24, 2015 when personnel at Daviess Community Hospital called the Washington Police Department and the Department of Child Services and reported a 37 day old infant was in the emergency room with severe injuries.   The infant was transferred to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis where even more injuries were discovered.

Monday Daviess Superior Judge Dean Sobecki heard a guilty plea from Palmer-Coy.  He pleaded guilty to one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. He also pleaded guilty to additional counts of possession of meth and carrying a handgun without a license.  The plea agreement contains a recommended sentence of 7 years in the Department of Corrections for the neglect charge and 6 months each on the handgun nd meth charges.  The actual sentence will be handed down at a hearing set for April 18th at 2:30-pm.

Last Friday, Freeburn pleaded guilty to one count in connection the neglect case as part of a plea agreement. She is due to be sentenced April 13th at 1-pm.  Her plea agreement contains a recommended sentence of 10 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections.
