Senator Coats says goodbye

You allowed Dan Coats an encore performance. And he gave it to you. But Coats, 73, assured his family, colleagues, mentors and constituents that his farewell from the Senate floor Tuesday will be his last. Coats, born in Michigan and now a resident of Fort Wayne, is retiring after 34 years of public service. Re-elected twice after being appointed to the Senate in 1988 after Dan Quayle left to become Vice President, Coats made a political comeback and regained his old Senate seat in 2010. He leaves this time with a warning to those he leaves behind that they must deal with two “transcendant issues”–the national debt and the threat of terrorism.
