New poll shows state races are tightening

Election night could be a nailbiter in Indiana if the latest poll is accurate, with dead heats in the races for governor and one congressional district, and a Republican surge into the lead in the race for Senate.

The third and final W-T-H-R-Howey Politics Indiana poll shows Eric Holcomb and John Gregg deadlocked at 42-percent apiece in the campaign for governor. Both candidates have gained slightly in each of the three Howey polls.

With Libertarian Rex Bell holding at five-percent, the race is on track to be decided by the 11-percent of voters who say they remain undecided.

A Monmouth University poll earlier this week gave Gregg a six-point lead, with five-percent undecided and a five-point margin of error. The Howey poll has a margin of error of four-percent.

The Howey poll gives Republican Congressman Todd Young his first lead in any public poll since former Senator Evan Bayh entered the Senate race, putting Young five points up as Bayh’s unfavorable ratings rise. The Monmouth poll had the race tied.

But the race for Young’s old Ninth District House seat has Republican Trey Hollingsworth leading Democrat Shelli Yoder by just two points, with a higher margin of error of five-point-six-percent.
