The Daviess County Museum opened a new exhibit this week. Local government meets a day late this week due to Columbus Day

MUSEUM

The Women of Distinction exhibit celebrates five notable lives of women from Daviess County. The exhibit is already open to the public and can be seen on the 4th floor of the museum, located at 212 E. Main St. in Washington.

The exhibit came about after some cleaning and inventory last year.  Museum Volunteer, Rose Palmer says some unique items so she along with fellow volunteers Peggy Holland and Becky Kremp designed an exhibit.

It features belongings and artifacts from Maude Arthur who in 1908 became the first woman to graduate from the IU School of Medicine and later opened the first orphanage in the county and practiced medicine for many years.
Also featured is Crystal McCord, who left home as a teenager to serve as a nurse near the front lines of World War I. McCord was caught in the flu epidemic sweeping the world shortly after the armistice and died in France, where she is buried.
The Women of Distinction exhibit also features artifacts and biographies honoring former Daviess County Museum curator Thelma Bingham, long-serving teacher and coach Lena Dunn, and civic leader Janet Goodwin.

The museum’s regular hours are Thursday and Friday from noon to 5, Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday 1 to 5. For more information call 812-257-0301.
