With around 35 to 40 family members and supporters of suspended WHS boys soccer coach Quintin Myers in attendance at Thursday night’s meeting, the Washington School Board suspended a long-standing policy of not allowing public comments about items not on the Board’s agenda.

While Washington school officials could not comment on an on-going personnel issue, one of Myers’ supporters, Mark Myers (no relation to the coach) said the suspension was the result of a player becoming ill and hospitalized for dehydration following an after-game practice last week.   Mark Myers told the Board that dehydration was a common occurrence among fall-sport athletes.  Former assistant coach Chase Taylor said he fully supported Coach Myers”.  And former WHS soccer player Brandon Smith called the suspension a “”knee-jerk reaction”.

Other speakers spoke of the importance of the Myers family legacy to soccer at WHS and called the suspension an “over-reaction”.  Myers’ father, former WHS soccer coach Kevin Myers, called the school system’s attempt to get Quentin Myers to resign his coaching position, “bullying”.   The controversy concerning Myers’ coaching position was not on the Board’s agenda, but Board Vice-President Pam Bartlett, who chaired the meeting in the absence of Steve Frette, said an executive session had been set for 5:00 p.m. September 22, to consider the personnel issue.
