Barr Reeve and North Daviess will be getting some new school resource officers.

The Daviess County Council yesterday approved funding for two deputies, who once on duty, will be going to the schools.

County Council President Mike Myers was quoted by the Times Herald as saying it’s a win-win for the county, schools and community.  The council approved $21,000 to hire the new officers.  The schools have obtained some grant money to defray some of the costs involved in the hires.

According to the newspaper, Daviess County Sheriff Jerry Harbstreit says hiring the additional officers has been in the planning stages for months. He told the council he has set aside screened potential officers and completed some of the early training so t they can start their jobs in the schools in one to three weeks.

When school is not in session the deputies will be assigned regular duties with the sheriff’s department.
