School Board makes some approves personnel recommendations and hears an update from Sodexo.

Personnel changes were the main item of business for a short Washington School Board meeting Thursday evening.   The Board accepted resignations from elementary teacher Amanda Salters, high school English teacher Melissa Stieneker, and attendance secretary Lisa Bouchie.   Approval was given to hire Stephanie Humerickhouse as high school attendance secretary, Michelle LeMond as an elementary teacher, and Megan Worland to fill in for a leave.  In other personnel action, leaves were granted to Robin Thomas and Megan Wildman.    The Board also voted to reappoint Shelly Crooks to the Washington Carnegie Public Library Board.

In another item of business, Assistant Superintendent Kevin Frank reported that Lena Dunn had completed preparation and was applying for a competitive grant aimed at improving student learning at Title I schools.

Also at last night’s meeting,  local Sodexo Supervisor, Rose Wilson reported the transition and integration of the dining and facilities staffs has gone smoothly.  Wilson said employees had undergone orientation and safety training in the past few weeks.  The dining staff at Griffith got an early start by serving a luncheon to the local Rotary Club last week.  Wilson said that the dining staff should have all of the school kitchens ready to go next week.  Earlier this year, the school corporation announced it would contract out food services and the overseeing of maintenance staff as a cost saving measure. Maintenance costs have been rising in recent years due to property tax caps enacted by the state legislature nearly 8 years ago.  Also the school system took a hit financially when it comes to salaries and benefits for cafeteria workers due to changes in healthcare laws.

A reminder that the first day of school for students in Washington will be August 4th. Teachers will report on August 3rd.

On-site registration for students in all grades will be at Washington High School and the Junior High School would be from 9-4 on July 25, and from 1-7 on July 26.
