Officials say that despite being discolored, the water in the Knox County town of Sandborn is still safe to drink.

A story in the Vincennes Sun Commercial reports that a new filter was installed in Sandborn’s water system last November.  With the new filter, iron levels rose and the town’s water became discolored.  According to the newspaper the problem initially cleared up, but has reappeared sporadically since then.

In the Sun Commercial article, Sandborn Town Council president Nate Yagle, says the water is safe to drink, but may cause discoloration if used for washing white clothes or light colored surfaces.  However, Sandborn officials say they do have some resources that may help people with clothing stained by the water.

Yagle says that people with personal water filters do not have any problems.   Beginning Monday, Sandborn will be flushing its water lines to rid them of excess iron.

But Yagle emphasizes that despite the discoloration, Sandborn’s water is safe to drink.
