Early turnout for Indiana primaries highest in 2 decades

More Indiana residents have cast their votes early for the state’s primary election than any of the previous nomination contests in at least two decades.

The Indiana Secretary of State’s Election Division reports more than 157,000 early votes had been cast as of Wednesday. That’s nearly 30,000 more than the 2008 primary, the last one without a presidential incumbent.

The record early turnout comes as the last full week of campaigning draws to a close for several hotly contested races. Presidential candidates from both parties have been crisscrossing the state in last-ditch efforts to win support before Tuesday’s primary. Republicans also will choose nominees for an open Senate seat and two congressional seats.
