Derrell Wayne Fry, 67, of Washington

Derrell Wayne Fry left this life peacefully at his home with his family on March 15, 2016.

Born in Terre Haute on May 1, 1948, the son of William and Geneva Fry graduated from Garfield High School and Indiana State University. After a stint in the U.S. Marine Corps, Fry married Sue Davis, and they moved to Washington in 1973.

Fry was a Certified Financial Planner and licensed insurance agent with The Insurance Shop. Active in Washington JayCees, he also was involved in community life as a founder of the Big Brother/Big Sister organization. For over 40 years he was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served as youth group sponsor and leader of Boy Scout Troop 470. Family and fishing were the other passions in his life.

Those who knew and loved Derrell appreciated his quick wit, sage advice, helping hands and loving heart. Derrell was never too busy to sit down and “shoot the breeze” over a cup of coffee and treasured his time with friends. Derrell loved his life and those in it. He filled his family with laughter, jokes, adventure, and love. The void he leaves is vast.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years Sue and three children he adored and was so proud of: Lisa (Trace) Weimer of Englewood, Ohio, Bethany (Andrew) Borland of Indianapolis, and Bryan (Meghan) Fry of Princeton, NJ. The five grandchildren he smothered with bear hugs and was delighted to watch grow include Dane Howell of Englewood, Nicaela Howell of Tipp City, OH, Austin Weimer of Englewood, Katy and Sara Borland of Indianapolis, One great-grandson, Maddox Howell, is too young to ever remember him but he will certainly hear tales of this playful grandpa. Also surviving are his sister Marilyn (Frank) Nicola of Martinsville and three nieces and nephews who called him “Uncle Skunk.”

The funeral service will be held Monday, March 21, 2016 at 11:00am at Gill Funeral Home, 308 E. Walnut Street, Washington, IN 47501. Pastor Ken Wells will be officiating. Interment will follow at Sugarland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2016 from 2:00-6:00pm also at Gill Funeral Home.
