Mark Smith running for County Commissioners

 

Washington resident Mark A. Smith has announced his candidacy for Daviess County Commissioner District 1 on the Democratic Ticket. A newcomer to politics, Smith is married to Lynn Cosby Smith. They moved to Washington in 1981 after Mark was Honorably Discharged from the U.S Air Force and earned the Meritorious Service Award. On Smith’s final tour hecross-trained as an Aircraft Mechanic -Jet Engines over 4- KC135A tothe Civil Engineering career field as an Industrial Engineering Technician and stationed atHomestead AFB, FL.

While serving his Country in Florida, Smith earned anAssociate’s Degree with Honorsin Accounting/Business from Miami Dade College.Smith alsoearned aBachelor’s Degree in Labor Studies from Indiana University in Bloomington June 1987.Smith is proud he was able to extend his education while working full-time. “I’ve always had a good work ethic and I hope to use my skills to serve the citizens of Daviess County as Commissioner.”

Smith’s professional experience includes working at NSWC Crane, INfrom 1982 toJuly 31st 2014 when he retired after 32 years of loyal service. Some of Smith’s accomplishments while working at Craneincluded competition at the Executive Management Program at IUPUI where he received a PMA from School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Smith was selected by NAVSEA in Washington, DC tocomplete a Master’s Degree in Public Affairs from Indiana University. He graduated from IU in May 2012.

Smith admits he became interested in local government while doing aresearch paper on the Combined Sewer Overflow control project started by Larry Haag, former Mayor of Washington. “That CSO project was clearly state-of-the art built at a fraction of the cost of traditional systems. As Commissioner I promise to carefully pursue progressive solutions to everyday problems while keeping a close eye on taxpayer’s dollars.”

Smith and his wife Lynn are very active in the local Catholic Community. Lynn works for the Daviess County Sheriff for 20 years as an EMD 911 Dispatcher. Smith says his family is blessed with two great sons Brian Patrick and Jason Alan Smith. They combined have given us soon to be five beautiful grandchildren. I have been active for many years in local high school sports broadcasting.

Smith believes his years of experience performing technical work in the government, controlling costs, working on several building construction projects at Crane, solving problems, performing cost accounting audits, interaction with engineers, scientist, logistics personnel, numerous other occupations to get things done; plusmy years of education has positioned meto do the job ofDaviess County Commissioner for District I.
