Washington looking at “public spaces”

With Washington Mayor Joe Wellman out of town on City business, Councilman Alan Brown presided over Monday’s City Council meeting.

After receiving the claims reports, the Council heard a report from Cindy Barber and Councilman Jason Petty on a Purdue University Extension program to enhance the value of public spaces.        Public spaces include parks, town centers, and area like walking and bike paths.   Petty says A forum of leaders from all segments of the community will meet on March 3…

Purdue University Extension says the decisions about the design and management of the public spaces can have a long term impact on the economic, social, and environmental health of the community.

Participants in the forum on March 3 will begin working on a strategic plan for a public space program tailored to the community.

In Monday’s meeting of the Board of Works and Safety, a request from DLC media and 20th Century Chevy to close Main Street for a mini Cruiz-in as part of the community spring festival and Rail Fest on May 14, was approved.

In other business, the board only received one bid for a new backhoe for the Street Department.  Members questioned Street Commissioner Ernie Evans about it.  Evans explained he had been working on the project for a year and a half and requests for bids had been publicly advertised.  Evans will check the specifications on the bid for action at the next meeting.

Board members also approved Clerk-Treasurer Beth McGookey’s request to cancel outstanding checks and warrants that were issued in 2012 and 2013.
