Indiana Governor Mike Pence has appealed a federal decision denying a request for assistance to help local governments recover from flooding and severe storms.

Pence said in a Wednesday statement that FEMA’s decision was “arbitrary,” ”erroneous” and “inconsistent” with the way it treats other states.

The federal funds were requested to help pay for an estimated $11 million in damages in 18 counties after severe summer storms deluged parts of the state, leading to flooding and crop damage.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said the summer storms were two distinct weather events, not one continuous storm. As a result, the state was ineligible for funding.
