Commissioners discuss 257 and hear a speed limit request

Insurance, the SIDC, safety on SR 257, and speeding motorist north of Montgomery were the main agenda items at Monday morning’s meeting of the Daviess County Commissioners.  Greg Jones presented budget request for a little over $8100 from the Southern Indiana Development Corporation in return for the SIDC’s economic development assistance for the County and its communities.

The second item on the agenda was a report from Commissioner Nathan Gabhart on the creation of an advisory insurance committee.  The purpose of the committee would be to examine and coordinate insurance information and benefits with other counties.  Gabhart proposed the committee would include representatives from the Sheriff’s and Highway Department, the County Council, the Health Department, and the County Auditor.

The Commissioners also discussed the situation on SR 257 last week where a driver was stranded in flood waters after the barricade at the East Fork River bridge was able to be moved because INDOT had failed to weight down the barricades.  The Commissioners will ask for a meeting between INDOT and the Daviess and Pike County Sheriff’s Department.  There was also discussion about requesting that INDOT raise the road level or construct a causeway to help with the flooding problem.

Steve Knepp and Roman Wagler asked the Commissioners to lower the speed limit on County Road 200 N, between CR 575 and 650 E.  The men said that a hill and speeding traffic had led to several wrecks in the area.  The Commissioners instructed Sheriff Harbstreitt to monitor traffic in the area and report back on the situation.

In other business the Commissioners approved the appointment of Jeff Riker as the IT support assistant at the Sheriff’s Department, and accepted bids for paving materials.
