Trucks causing big damage in Monroe City

Heavy trucks using side streets to avoid a highway construction project are causing havoc in Monroe City.

Officials in put up signs several weeks ago threatening $1,000 fines for trucks weighing more than 5 tons caught driving on its streets.

But the county sheriff Mike Morris says the drivers aren’t breaking any state laws by using side streets to avoid the Indiana 61 work zone and not following the official detour around the 500-person town.

Town councilman Bill Sampson tells the Vincennes Sun-Commercial (http://bit.ly/1HC4fbS ) the trucks are tearing up streets and yards.

Street repairs are estimated to cost the town at least $185,000.

Town and county officials hope to meet soon with the state highway department on possible solutions.
