Jobless numbers may not tell the whole story

The Indiana Institute for Working Families says the latest state jobless numbers aren‘t what they‘re cracked up to be. Institute Spokesman Derek Thomas says unemployment has dropped to 5.4% in Indiana because so many Hoosiers have left the labor force. He says more than 18,000 people have left the labor market in the past three months. Thomas adds that wages have also remained stagnant much to detriment of poor, working families. He says despite the jobless numbers, poverty also continues to rise. Thomas adds that Indiana‘s quickly rising population – a half-million Hoosiers 16 and older – is outpacing job growth. He says job creation and raising wages should remain top priorities in Indiana.
